MY STORY SO FAR…
MY STORY SO FAR…
MY STORY SO FAR…

2019 was a big year for me. A routine health check revealed a couple of the middle-age nasties no-one wants hear; high cholesterol and an increasing BMI. Having got married the year before I was well into the swing of an all-too-comfortable lifestyle. I’ve always been fit, active and well and this was a real shock to the system for me. I needed to make a change before things went too far south.
But, I’d never been a runner. I’d undergone double knee surgery 3 years earlier after tearing my ACL clattering around on a football pitch, and I could still hear the words of the surgeon echoing in my ears “It’s been a success, but you’ll never be a runner, Mr Wilson”.
I’ve always been strong-willed, and the surgeon’s words started to feel like a challenge. Could I get my broken knees to run?!
After starting out with a few gentle 5k jogs around my local area, I graduated from the occasional park run to a 10k, a half marathon, and then I discovered trails and that’s where the fun really started!
The road from starting out in 2019 to placing 5th in the Spine Sprint at the start of 2025 has rarely been smooth. It’s littered with lessons learned the hard way, through disasters, through successes, through tears, through laughter, through pain, through studies, through the amazing ultra-running community that I am proud to be a part of, and from the athletes I have coached.
My aim as a coach is simple: to help you prepare for the things you don’t even know you need to prepare for, so that you can build the confidence to achieve your ultra-running goals. If I can do it, I know you can too with the right support.
Remember those immortal words “you’ll never be a runner, Mr Wilson”? Well…

I was out running on Saturday & I just want to say a massive thank you for getting me this far! I felt amazing out there, I was loving it & I was smiling all the way round! There would have been a time...even may be when I got on the start line last year, that I was full of fear, dreading the hills & the discomfort! Now, I know how to tackle them, how to deal with the discomfort & mentally more focused!! And I love being out there!!! You've taught me this physically & mentally & I just want to say thank you & you're an amazing coach!

I reached out to Andy to prepare for an ultra-marathon. Having been a competitive athlete in the past Andy had a tough job to rediscover my fitness but also support my mindset and keep me on track. The plan he provided was comprehensive and ensured I balanced progress with recovery while allowing to prepare me for the race. Andy was attentive and always there for a pep talk or check in when I needed it. He was willing to work with my hectic work schedule and it was a pleasure to work with him to pursue my lofty goal! I would recommend Andy to anyone, from those looking to get a little fitter to those seeking a new challenge - he’s worth his weight in gold.

As well as an ultra event coming up I want to better myself and get fitter. I look forward to my coaching sessions and Andy gives me inspiration to push my boundaries. His knowledge and experience is priceless to anyone who wants to improve their running performance.

Andy is a great coach. I have been working with him since July 2024. He has a deep knowledge of ultra running, how to train, how to fuel, race management, and probably most importantly, how to enjoy this most gruelling of sports. At 57 years old, I didn’t think I could do much more to improve my running— I was wrong. I now feel so much fitter and more confident to take on the Hardmoors 110 in May. If you are thinking about working with a coach to help you achieve your goals, I highly recommend Andy and Dura Coaching.

"Andy has a really solid understanding of the underpinning science and philosophy of ultra running but what really makes him great is how he considers each athlete individually when thinking about their training needs. That and the fact he is huge fun to run with!"
